Mental Chemistry and How it Works for Us or Against Us
The world would like us to believe in luck, chance, fate, accidents and mishaps, that we do not control our destiny. That some men are destined for greatness while others mediocrity or poverty. This line of thinking represents the largest, most damaging lie shared among the human race.
The same laws, order and consistency that hold the sun, moon, and stars in their respective positions with perfect harmony governs thought and mind. The heights of achievement by one man can invariably be achieved by any and all other men that will follow the same thought process.
How Mental Chemistry works
Charles Haanel teaches us, ”Mental Chemistry is the science which treats of the changes which material conditions undergo through the operations of the mind, verified by exact observation and correct thinking.
As the transformations which are brought about in applied chemistry are the results of the orderly combination of materials, it follows that mental chemistry brings about results in a like manner.
Eternal Laws govern the conscious world of thought
In the organic world one atom of sodium and one of chlorine give us salt, and this combination alone can give us salt, and no other combination of elements can give us salt.
What is true in the organic world is likewise true in the inorganic – certain conscious processes will produce certain effects, and the result will invariably be the same. The same thought will always be followed by the same consequence, and no other thought will serve the purpose.”
There is tremendous power in the understanding this principal. Haanel teaches us here that the same eternal laws that govern the inorganic world also govern the conscious world of thought and mind.
Haanel reasons that just as the right combination of chlorine and sodium will always result in the creation of salt, the right combination of focused thought will invariably result in the creation of the same effect in the conscious, organic world.
In other words, the combination of thoughts or thinking that gives one man success or certain results can invariably be achieved by any other man if he simply follows that same thought process.
Primordial man relied on his club
Primordial man, naked and bestial, squatting in gloomy caverns, gnawing bones, was born, lived, and died in a hostile world. His hostility and his wretchedness arose form his ignorance. His handmaidens were Hate and Fear. He relied on his club. He saw in beasts, forests, seas, clouds, and even his fellow man, only enemies. He recognized no ties binding them one to another or to himself.
Modern Man relies upon his brain
Modern man is born into comparative luxury. When he goes forth to struggle he wields a pencil, not a club. He relies upon his brain, not his brawn. He knows the phsical as neither master nor equal, but as a useful servant. His fellow men and the forces of Nature are his friends – not his enemies.
Tremendous changes in thought have occurred over the past 200 years. Changes from hate to love, from fear to confidence, from material strife to mental control, all attributed to the slow dawn of Understanding.
Jacques Loeb shares an some interesting insight “In order to obtain the material, potted
rose bushes are brought into a room and placed in front of a closed window. If the plants are allowed to dry out, the aphides (parasites), previously wingless, change to winged insects. After the metamorphosis, the insects leave the plants, fly to the window and then creep upward on the glass.”
It is evident that these tiny insects found that the plants on which they had been thriving were dead, and that they could therefore secure nothing more to eat and drink form this source, the only method by which they could save themselves from starvation was to grow temporary wings and fly, which they did.
Man’s capacity to think makes him a creator
The Universe is alive. In order to express life there must be mind; nothing can exist without mind or thought. It is man’s capacity to think that makes him a creator instead of a creature.
Throughout the entire Universe the law of cause and effect is ever at work. This law is supreme; here a cause, there and effect. They can never operate independently. One is supplementary to the other. Nature at all time is endeavoring to establish a perfect equilibrium and is ever active. Universal harmony is the goal which all nature strives for.
The sun, the moon, the stars are all held in their respective positions because of harmony. They travel in their orbits, they appear at certain times in certain places because of the precision of the law, so much so that astronomers are able to tell us where various stars will appear in a thousand years from now.
Chance, Luck, Accident?
How often do we hear people speaking of luck, chance, accident, and mishap; but are any of these really possible? If there is perfect order in one part of the Universe, doesn’t it stand to reason that there is order throughout?
Ether fills all interplanetary space. Thought dropped in to this substance causes vibrations which in turn unite with similar vibrations and react upon the thinker. Like attracts like on every plain of existence. All manifestations are the result of thought.
There are almost limitless planes of thought to which man may be responsive. It is strictly the nature of our thinking that determines to which plane we shall respond. There are thoughts or planes of the ignorant, the wise, the poor, the wealthy, the sick or healthy. The number of thought planes are infinite. The point is that when we think on a definite plane, we are responsive to thoughts on that plane, and the effect of the reaction is apparent in our environment.
This can be a very encouraging or discouraging point to absorb depending on our stage in life. Suppose that your current mental chemistry experiment is not entirely successful; try again. Few of us are proud of our first efforts at anything.
You can therefore think the thoughts of every sage, every artist, every financier, every captain of industry who ever existed, for thoughts never die.
A thought is a thing which cannot be seen, or heard, we cannot taste it, we cannot smell it,
we cannot feel it. Our senses must be stilled. Thought is a spiritual activity and cannot reach us through a material channel. We must relax both mentally and physically, channel our thoughts toward the desired result, and wait, wait quietly, wait patiently.
The success of our experiment will depend entirely on our ability to become receptive, followed by our willingness to act boldly with faith and confidence shunning fear of failure or fear of the unknown.
I am grateful for the power of thought, mind, and agency. I am humbled by the thoughts shared by great men like Charles Haanel, James Allen, Napolian Hill to name a few that I remembered as I wrote this post. They have inspired my thinking, which then did the same for the events and environment of my life.
As I left my oncologist’s office yesterday, I was reminded of how proper thought, belief, and faith with the love of friends and family combined to help beat cancer. The cancer has been in remission for almost 2 years now. Life, the Universe are too infinite in scope for our currently limited minds to grasp all the possibilities. Surely the possibilities are limitless, surely amazing things are possible to all that engage in proper thinking and faith in our Creator.
