What is a data aggregator?

How can they help improve my search rankings?

data aggregators

data aggregator is an organization involved in compiling business information (name, address, phone number, website, and product/service category) into a database.  These companies compile or “aggregate” information from various online and offline sources including phone records, public records, business registration, county records, tax records, bank records, chamber of commerce membership, and many other sources.

Who are the 3 local search directory aggregators?

The big 3 aggregators for local search directories are Infogroup, Localeze, and Acxiom.

How are my search rankings improved by listing my business with the big 3 aggregotors?

Business that are cited (name, address, phone) at certain websites in the local search echosystem are going to rank higher in the search engine results than those that aren’t with other factors being equal.  Some of these citations carry more weight with Google and validate that your business is part of the community.  Claimed citations with the big 3 help increase the degree of certainty the search engines have about your business’s contact information and the category of services/products that it offers.  Important citations sources include:

  • Data aggregtors.  Acxiom, Localeze, Infogroup
  • State business registration.  Utah.gov, Colorado.gov etc.
  • Local Chamber of Commerce
  • Internet yellow pages (IYP).  Superpages.com, Yellowpages.com, or Yellowbook.com etc.
  • Local Search Engines.  Google Places, Yahoo Local, and Bing Local.

Now you know that quality of citations are a key component for ranking algorithms.  You should also know that the quantity of citations for your business also matter in the ranking algorithms. Other factors being equal, businesses with a greater number of citations will probably rank higher than businesses with fewer citations.

The advantage of claiming your listing with the big 3 can be huge for small/local business because they share or provide information with hundreds of other digital portals.  So placing your NAP (name, address, phone) with these aggregators can eventually turn into hundreds of citations at many well-established and well-indexed portals.
